Vehicle Hail Damage Explained

What are your options

We here at Country Hills Toyota were assaulted by golf ball sized hail on July 30th causing plenty of damage to our vehicle inventory. Our Mega Hail of a Sale starts August 8th.

Do you have a comprehensive insurance policy?

Even a few hail dents can be expensive

Hail Damage Repair CalgaryThe biggest question with hail damage is whether or not you have comprehensive insurance coverage. Typically you will NOT be covered for hail if you do not. In Alberta especially, many policy holders don’t have hail coverage and glass coverage because it’s so expensive.  Windshield and hail damage are a common occurrences in Alberta and thus insurance premiums are higher.

Even a few small hail dents can be costly especially if you are paying out of pocket.

Insurance Claims for Hail Damage

If you do have hail coverage, whether you should file a claim depends on a few things. Take into consideration how much the cost of repair for hail damage is, how much your deductible is and how much your vehicle is worth. If it’s going to cost $3,500 for a paint job and dent repair and you have a $1,000 deductible, your company will only cover the remaining $2,500 then it may not be worth it.

Hail Damage Repair CalgaryIf you own your vehicle and have no plans to sell it in the future, forgoing the cosmetic repair and keeping the cash settlement may be worth your while. However, if you do plan to sell or trade your vehicle, small, cosmetic damage will definitely affect the resale value. If your vehicle's a crapper, you might be better off using the cash for something else.

If this is your first time filing a hail damage claim than typically you will not have consequences.

This always depends on your insurance company however.  It is a good idea to check out what the insurance policies say about this when you renew.  It is not uncommon to sometimes face increased deductibles for several hail claims.  They can also decide not to offer you coverage.

You will need to always speak to your insurance company first and foremost before calling a collision repair shop. They will send you to one of their hail assessment centre's to get an estimate of the costs and damage. It is at this point you can choose which repair shop to go to.

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) - What is it?

Paintless Dent RepairIn most cases our Collision Centre (as well as most others) will employ a process known as Paintless Dent Repair to fix hail damage. It has grown in popularity over the last decade because it is more cost effective than the traditional process.   The old school way was to fill dents with paint or body filler which is then matched to the rest of the vehicles exterior. This method is time consuming and expensive.  With PDR there are no fillers and no sanding. It is environmentally friendly and restores your vehicle's body back to pre hail condition at a fraction of the cost.  PDR is used in several types of smaller cosmetic damages to vehicle exteriors. Approximately 80-90% of all dents can be fully removed through Paintless Dent Removal.

How is PDR done?

  • 1. Gain access to the back side of the dent through removing body panels, tail lights, or interior panels

  • 2. Using lights and tools, a trained technician massages the dent back to its original condition from the opposite side of the dent.
  • 3. Slow pressure and specialized tools are utilized in a non-invasive way
  • 4. The process can be done quickly and cost effectively.
